Professional Wealth Management
for Growth and Income
Grow, Preserve and Protect Your Wealth
Dion Money Management specializes in wealth management and uses portfolios of mutual funds and exchange-traded funds. Our investment objective is to achieve continued growth and retirement income for you and your family with a customized, risk-adjusted portfolio designed to preserve and protect your wealth.
Dion has been managing investment assets for individuals, families and businesses across the United States for more than a decade. We are an SEC-registered adviser currently managing more than $750 million* in assets. Our expertise is in building and managing diversified portfolios using mutual funds and exchange-traded funds. Our diversification criteria apply regardless of your investment time horizon and risk tolerance, because we believe these criteria are the surest way to deliver consistent and stable returns over time. Consistency and stability are necessary characteristics for superior long-term performance.
Working with Fidelity and Schwab:
Large Enough to Matter, Small Enough to Care
Dion has worked with Fidelity Investments for over 11 years and has a longstanding relationship with Charles Schwab & Co. If you have accounts at either Fidelity or Schwab, we can easily upgrade them to institutional accounts without any transfer of assets.
At Dion, we are fee-based advisers. Our process is straightforward and focused. We begin by listening to your investment needs and wants, and, most important, we listen to your fears. Then we analyze your existing portfolio(s) and construct an investment plan that addresses your unique objectives and protects you and your family. To ensure that the plan meets your objectives, we constantly search for the optimum portfolio structure using the most appropriate funds for a given market environment. Our process is simple, but its implementation takes dedication, focus and commitment. These three characteristics are embodied by Dion Money Management and its founder, Donald R. Dion, Jr., Esq., CPA.

Donald R. Dion, Jr., Esq., CPA
Founder and Chief Investment Officer
Don Dion has been managing his family’s wealth since 1982. In 1994, Don began publishing the Fidelity Independent Adviser to share his extensive investment knowledge with a broader audience. In 1996, at the request of his newsletter subscribers, Don founded Dion Money Management to provide a customized approach. This gave his subscribers, who read the monthly publications and valued Don’s advice, the ability to have Don actively manage their portfolios for them and protect and grow the wealth they had created. Don has been investing for more than 25 years and has experienced market ups and downs. He resolves to minimize the downside while achieving the risk-adjusted returns required by investors who need to protect and grow their investments. His outlooks and opinions have been quoted in the Wall Street Journal, Barron’s and the New York Times. He has also appeared on CNNmoney.com. Don is the author of Dion on Vanguard, a book published by Pegasus Press.
Don began his career at the international accounting firm Ernst & Young as a certified public accountant. He later joined the renowned law firm of Warner & Stackpole in Boston, where he practiced corporate and tax law until 1985. He then became the executive vice president of finance, treasurer and director of the Patten Corporation. Don later founded Patten Financial Services Corporation, where he served as president for two years.
Don subsequently founded Litchfield Financial Corporation, where he served as chairman and chief executive officer for eight years. He managed the initial public offering of Litchfield in 1992. Litchfield was acquired by the Textron Financial Corporation in 1999.
Don earned his B.A. from Saint Michael’s College, his J.D. from the University of Maine School of Law and his LL.M. in taxation from the Boston University School of Law. Don is a licensed attorney in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the State of Maine. Having passed NASD Series 7 and Series 65 exams, Don is an investment adviser representative licensed in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the State of Florida.
Today, Don Dion continues to lead Dion Money Management as president and chief investment officer. Each day, Don directs a staff of 50 with a resolution to deliver consistent returns regardless of market environment. Under Don’s direction, five investment management teams meet each client’s needs. Your team supports your goals and those of your family by analyzing your unique investing needs, designing and monitoring your portfolio, opening your accounts (by identifying and completing all necessary applications), executing portfolio transactions, and issuing or accepting check requests and wire transfers. While your assets and accounts are always in your name, your Dion team serves as your investing partner, helping you navigate the turbulent equity and bond markets.

New Client Relationships
Dion Money Management clients are referred to us by an existing client or a client’s family member, or they start out as subscribers to one of Don’s Fidelity Independent Adviser financial newsletters.
Our primary goal is to preserve wealth for our clients and their families and grow it in a safe manner. In many cases, we serve as a welcome safety net for a surviving spouse who has had no reason or desire to invest the time necessary to manage his or her assets. Many of our clients already know Don from one of his Hulbert-rated newsletters or by reading the monthly and cumulative returns of his model portfolios, which have been displayed on the front page of each issue for the past 11 years. The tone of his newsletters—simplicity, structure and consistency—carries into Dion Money Management with an added degree of customization and personal attention.
A typical money management client is an investor responsible for family finances who, as a result of years of working and asset accumulation, is ready to start an advisory relationship, often after following the model portfolios and advice in one of Don’s financial newsletters. Don’s newsletters are an appropriate investment guide when a portfolio is of a modest size. As a portfolio grows to a more serious amount, it needs the constant attention of professional money management—a service that Don’s subscribers are entitled to receive.
The catalyst for the transition to professional money management may be a change in circumstances or tolerance for risk; a shortened or (more often) lengthened investment timeline; and sometimes a life event such as a health issue, a family wealth transfer or retirement.
Prior to engaging Dion, many clients had invested successfully with a portion of their portfolios but had investments that were underperforming. As a result, we allow clients to incorporate their best holdings into their Dion Money Management portfolios. Then we customize each portfolio to meet our client’s needs in consideration of the cost basis, dollar-cost averaging, and long- and short-term movements of the market.
We work with you to customize your portfolio to your individual circumstances during retirement, something larger companies may be unable or unwilling to do. In any market—rising, falling, sideways or reactionary—you will not experience a cookie-cutter approach to managing your portfolio. We will pay attention to you as an individual and will be there to understand your needs as they change over time.
We manage relationships ranging from $200,000 to mid-seven figures. Our clients and their families, on average, have $400,000* under our oversight. Experience tells us that traditional national brokerage firms will place an account of this size in a predesigned “model” portfolio (along with hundreds or thousands of other customer accounts). We believe that our clients deserve better.

Customized, Risk-Adjusted Returns
Dion is a conservative investment firm with two main building blocks for investment strategy: risk-adjusted returns and the diversification advocated in modern portfolio theory.
Risk-Adjusted Returns
Investing during retirement is not just about the returns, it’s about the risk associated with achieving a targeted return. The market has changed over the last five years. Investors are smarter. Information is available more quickly and to greater numbers of investors. The resulting market movements happen faster.
How do we provide you with the best returns relative to the risk? We build your custom portfolio based on the acceptable level of risk for you and your family. Targeting a 15 percent annual return, for example, requires a greater exposure to risk than targeting an 8 to 10 percent annual return in a retirement portfolio carefully crafted to minimize downside risk.
Modern Portfolio Theory Diversification
Modern portfolio theory is a discipline that advocates overall diversification in your investments so that your portfolio will be able to handle movement in the market on a consistent, stable basis, allowing the portfolio to maximize growth relative to risk. Through regular monitoring and periodic rebalancing, we ensure that diversification is maintained year in and year out.

Keep Your Best Holdings
When we review your current portfolio, we will not just sell everything that you own now and put you in a completely different portfolio, as many companies do. You may have a stock that you want to hold or shouldn’t sell due to tax consequences, or you may have a mutual fund that represents an investment category that is in one of our recommended portfolios. Often there are solid holdings around which we can build a risk-adjusted portfolio.
While there are common holdings across our portfolios, to a large extent every portfolio is customized. We analyze the final fund selection as a whole. The underlying stocks in the funds are compared to avoid inadvertent stock overlap or high concentrations of certain stocks. In the end, we know what you own and you know what you own. You are part of the process. We won’t make a single change when we initially build your portfolio unless you agree with the changes we propose. You will not find this customized approach elsewhere, where your portfolio is exactly like thousands of others.
The Value of a Fee-Based Relationship
Mutual fund or ETF trades in your Fidelity or Schwab account will not be subject to transaction fees or loads, which are either waived by Fidelity or Schwab or paid by Dion. For stock transactions, we have arrangements with Fidelity and Schwab to sell securities at attractive rates. Our fee-based financial incentives are aligned with yours: to grow, preserve and increase your wealth. Dion charges a fixed quarterly fee based on the value of your portfolio. As a result, we always sit on your side of the table when determining the appropriate strategy for you and your family. Our fiscal incentive is to grow your portfolio and provide you with a risk-adjusted return after fees that will meet your family’s growth and income needs.

The First Step: Upgrade to a Fidelity or Schwab Institutional Account
The first step in the transition to money management is to upgrade your accounts to the institutional side of Fidelity or Schwab. We will provide this service for you. Dion has more than $850 million invested on the institutional side of our custodians. As an institutional investor, Dion has access to funds that retail investors can’t purchase or can purchase only at a higher front load, at a higher back load or with a minimum as high as $100,000, for example. These loads and minimums are waived for Dion.
Upgrading your account to the institutional side allows Fidelity or Schwab to custody your assets. Dion does not custody your assets. Accounts are always in your name, and your money never changes hands. Our objective is to manage, preserve and grow your wealth on a consistent basis through your institutional account. All assets are transferred in kind. Nothing is bought or sold until we have an investment strategy approved by you.
As an institutional investor, you will continue to receive the monthly Fidelity or Schwab account statements that you read now. In addition, you will receive quarterly Dion statements that will simplify the reporting of activities in your portfolio, so you can monitor your portfolio either monthly or quarterly. Anytime we make a trade, you will be notified by printed confirmation from Fidelity or Schwab. You can continue to log on to the Fidelity or Schwab Web site to watch your portfolio daily or weekly, just as you do now. When you pick up the phone to call Dion, you’ll talk to your personal investment strategist.
You may open one or more of the following accounts: Individual or Joint, Individual Retirement Account (IRA), Trust, Corporate, Custodial, Keogh, 403(b), 401(k) or Retirement Annuity.
Securities in accounts carried by National Financial Services Corporation (NFSC), a Fidelity Investments company, are protected by the Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC) for up to $500,000 (including cash claims limited to $100,000). SIPC protection is for losses in the event of the failure of a brokerage firm. NFSC has arranged for additional unlimited insurance protection for cash and securities to supplement its SIPC coverage. Neither coverage protects against a decline in the market value of securities.
At Schwab, securities in your account are protected by the SIPC with up to $500,000 of protection in accounts you hold in a separate account capacity (for instance as custodian, joint tenant or sole owner) with a limit of $100,000 for claims in cash balances. In addition, Schwab has arranged additional account protection through Travelers Casualty and Surety Company of America (Travelers). Travelers provides excess protection above the SIPC limit up to the total net equity value of each of your accounts for securities and an additional $900,000 for claims for cash balances per separate account capacity. This protection does not cover fluctuations in the market value of your securities. Account protection is not provided by SIPC or Travelers for the accounts of banks or broker/dealers maintained for their own accounts.

Matching Goals, Needs and Investment Strategy
As we upgrade your account to an institutional account, you will be asked to complete an Investor Profile and consult with a Dion investment adviser regarding your goals. Only after we consult with you about your investments and goals directly and in detail do we recommend the Dion investment program that is best suited to you and your family. This strategy is reviewed annually with you and can be realigned at any point in the year at your request.
Confidential Portfolio Review
Send or fax your statements for a confidential portfolio review, at no cost to you. Our analysis will encompass asset class segmentation, stocks, bonds, international holdings, underlying stock overlap and concentrations. Are you overly concentrated in value stocks, large caps or small caps? Is your portfolio lopsided? What are your sector weightings compared to the S&P 500? We can uncover exposure to risk that may not be apparent or may be due to gradual purchases and growth over time.
Start with Three Months of Transition, at No Cost to You
We offer our money management service at no cost for the first three months to provide a comfortable transition for you and your family. Many portfolio managers may tell you, in a 15- or 20-minute conversation, that they have the exact portfolio for you. We use the first three months to develop a personalized portfolio strategy for you and to make sure that you feel comfortable with that investment strategy prior to executing any transactions. The first three months also provide you with a no-obligation timeframe to evaluate whether Dion is performing as you expected. This time period also allows us to determine whether we can work well with you.
Enter into a Personal Relationship
Each Dion client has his or her own team working with Don. While you may be managing money on your own right now, it is important to have knowledgeable advisers who understand your circumstances and who can continue to take care of your family should you be unable to do so. At other companies, you may have experienced higher turnover than you will find at Dion Money Management, where our philosophy of treating employees fairly, rewarding value and challenging them intellectually results in loyal, competent support for our clients.
Support for the Financial Impact of Life Events
A life event can have a significant impact on your portfolio and your ability to manage it, whether it is retirement, a health problem, the death of spouse, a windfall, the sale of a company or an inheritance. Your Dion Money Management team will be there to help you navigate life events and make judicious decisions at each step to protect your assets and keep your portfolio managed and balanced.
